Data Warehouse is a storage of an organization’s historical data. Usually, data warehouse is built to provide a decision support system to the management. Data warehouse can be mined (using data mining) and queried to collect overall and summarized business information that significantly helps in decision making. It can provide trends over many years.

Operational databases are optimized for day to day operation access. Here, the relationships are normalized and further divided into more relations/tables to make accessing faster that also reduces data traffic among the systems. But data warehouse does the reverse, where relationships/tables are denormalized as much as possible to provide the required information to the management. As data warehouse provides summarized information de-normalization helps, otherwise the data would be required to collect from many tables and the queries may be running over data for 10 years (millions/billions of records). Usually, data warehouse is created separately from the operational databases.

You can buy either external or internal hard drives. You can replace existing internal hard drive/s with your purchased hard drive/s. There are ways (software) that can create an exact image of your existing data into the new drive. The new drive will boot and work like the existing/old hard drive/s.

What to consider before buying an external hard drive? For laptops? If you want a really portable one – then find something that gets power through USB/Interface ports. Any external hard drive should work with laptops but desktop versions will/may need power connections

Western Digital, Seagate are good hard drive companies. Among others Hitachi, Samsung can be ok.

You need to check the port type the hard drive uses, and also does your laptop supports that type of ports/interfaces or not. Almost all supports USB (2.0), some support SATA, FireWare. SATA may be bit faster than USB and FireWare where USB and FireWare give approximately equivalent speed. However, SATA as an external port is not common.

To select right size, you need to think what you need, how long/many years will you use the hard drive. You may never exceed/need 320 GB. How much can you afford?Size also determines the price. At present, to my knowledge, the maximum capacity for portable laptop drives is 500 GB. Price range: 70-160 CDN$. Prices may vary from store to store a bit also with brands and models. Also, check that drives of the same size from the same company may be priced almost similar. At this point 300 and 400 GB from Western Digital are priced at 129.99.

Are you getting the right price?
If you want to save on price, it’s always a better idea that you plan your purchase a little before than you will really buy the product. If you need instantly, you may have to sacrifice on price. Now to get a better price, you can use the price comparison services such as nexttag, pricegrabber. Also, use web-sites such as newegg.ca, newegg.com, tigerdirect.com/ca to compare prices. Also, use cnet.com reviews on products. You can check the product reviews at cnet.com to find out the pros and cons of the particular hard drive that you plan to buy.

Also check for data protection features of the drive. Checking for technical support of the shop or the manufacturer is always a must. Personally, I do not prefer to accept shop provided extra service/support plan.

Check for the Rotation Per Minute(7200, 5400) and Data Transfer Rates of the Drives (400-480 Mbits/sec for USB/FireWare, SATA more). Usually, the more the better. Also, the drive should be reliable/stable. Research online for reliability/stability of the drive (company/brand/model)
