Related to Domain and Hosting under Different Companies; what about sub-domains #Root #By Sayed Ahmed

In one case, I faced a situation when a sub-domain was not working (not on browser, also no answer from ping) . The domain was working alright. The domain was purchased from one company where the hosting was under another company. No, I did not work with the situation (with that domain) (to resolve it). However, I did a test on my own to see what can be done. The solution may actually depend on many factors depending on the domain and hosting companies and configurations; Hence, not necessarily the following solution will work for you.

So, what was my experiment? say the domain name is s-ahmed.com ( not using the actual domain name that I tested with). The domain is purchased from GoDaddy.com.

And the hosting is provided under OnlineServicesCloud.com (yes, this is under my full control) as a completely new hosting account (not as an add-on domain). At GoDaddy, the only change was updating the name servers after purchasing the hosting. At GoDaddy, I provided ns1.onlineservicescloud.com and ns2.onlineservicescloud.com as the DNS servers. I did not change anything else at GoDaddy. Though I can see that Domain forwarding is turned off at GoDaddy. Also, it says 0 sub-domain is forwarded. I created the sub-domain test.s-ahmed.com for example using cpanel under the hosting account for s-ahmed.com. It worked almost instantly (within 5 minutes). I had to provide permission 755 on the sub-domain folder. Did create an index.php file inside the folder. In my case, I had to do little more. I created an .htaccess file inside the sub-domain folder (this is my server configuration – may not apply to yours). Then it worked. From: http://sitestree.com/?p=1560

DNS A Records and CNAME Records in Practice #Root #By Sayed Ahmed

The information as given below in a table are from a real domain and hosting.

I just replaced the actual domain name with sahmed.com

The domain is originally purchased at godaddy.com, and I created a hosting account for that domain (a real hosting account – not an add-on domain) under www.onlineservicescloud.com (i.e. I could act as hosting reseller).

 

Note:

sahmed.com uses an A record

 

www.sahmed.com uses a CNAME record

mail.sahmed.com uses a CNAME record

ftp.sahmed.com uses a CNAME record

 

all other sub-domains used A records

All these were created automatically as soon as I creating hosting account for the domain (I used WHM to create the hosting account)

Yes, I did not mention the real IP address here.

 

A Record: Returns a 32-bit IPv4 address, most commonly used to map hostnames to an IP address of the host

CNAME Record: Alias of one name to another: the DNS lookup will continue by retrying the lookup with the new name

 

At GoDaddy, I provided NS1.ONLINESERVICESCLOUD.COM and NS2.ONLINESERVICESCLOUD.COM as the DNS servers. Yes, the hosting account is created under onlineservicescloud.com.

At GoDaddy domain forwarding is turned off. At GoDaddy 0 Sub-domain is forwarded.
