A laptop advertised as ‘new’ may be factory-sealed, factory-opened for inspection, retailer-configured, open-box, refurbished or previously returned. Each condition can be worth considering—but only if the discount, warranty and expected condition are clear and the seller’s description is accurate.

Condition terminology

Condition
Usual interpretation
Check carefully

New factory-sealed
Manufacturer-standard configuration in its original seal state
Model suffix, authenticity, regional warranty

New seller-upgraded
Retailer opens and alters memory, storage or OS before shipment
Who performed upgrade, warranty, OS licence, original components

Open box
Retail packaging previously opened; sometimes returned, demo or inspection
Battery wear, missing parts, scratches, warranty start date

Manufacturer-refurbished
Inspected/refurbished through official or approved process
Grade, replaced parts, warranty

Seller-refurbished
Reconditioned through third-party process
Tester credibility, battery health, returns

Used/private sale
Previous owner’s unit
Serial, lock status, warranty, condition, buyer protection

Canada Computers’ own 2026 discussion of open-box items notes that they may be prior returns, display/demo products or units opened for inspection. That is not inherently disqualifying, but it is different from factory sealed. Discounts should reflect the loss of certainty and possibly warranty or return flexibility.

The reseller-upgrade complication

Some marketplace listings offer 32GB or 64GB RAM and a large SSD beyond the manufacturer’s original stock configurations. Technicians may have opened the laptop and installed components. Request a bill of materials: RAM model, SSD model, original drive disposition, whether thermal pads were disturbed, upgrade testing results and who handles failures. If a model officially has soldered memory, claims of a higher aftermarket RAM amount deserve especially rigorous verification.

What to check on an open-box unit

Inspect display for pixel defects, image retention and cracks; hinges for asymmetry and unusual sounds; USB-C charging ports for looseness; keyboard for wear; fans for abnormal noise; battery-report design/full-charge capacity and charge cycles where available; security state and activation locks; charger authenticity; and matching serial labels. Factory reset a previously used system before entering sensitive credentials and confirm legitimate Windows activation.

When is the discount sufficient?

There is no universally correct percentage. A lightly opened high-end business notebook with intact manufacturer coverage and a generous return window may be excellent value. A tiny discount on a model with unverified battery wear, no accessories and seller-only warranty is less attractive. The buyer should price uncertainty and lost service coverage, not simply compare ‘new’ versus ‘open box’ headings.

Bottom line: Condition should be treated as a real specification. Seek written proof, inspect promptly, and never assume ‘seller upgraded’ means either bad or identical to manufacturer-direct.
