{"id":78821,"date":"2026-09-09T03:08:03","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T03:08:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bangla.sitestree.com\/?p=78821"},"modified":"2026-09-09T03:08:05","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T03:08:05","slug":"pan-lan-can-man-and-wan-understanding-network-types-by-geographic-scope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bangla.sitestree.com\/?p=78821","title":{"rendered":"PAN, LAN, CAN, MAN, and WAN: Understanding Network Types by Geographic Scope"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PAN, LAN, CAN, MAN, and WAN: Understanding Network Types by Geographic Scope REf: AI Tools as IS<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Computer networks are often classified according to the geographic area they cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common categories are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PAN \u2014 Personal Area Network<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LAN \u2014 Local Area Network<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CAN \u2014 Campus Area Network<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MAN \u2014 Metropolitan Area Network<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WAN \u2014 Wide Area Network<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, these categories may look like they are defined simply by distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, that is only partly true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are no universal rules such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>0\u20131 km = LAN<\/strong><br><strong>1\u201330 km = MAN<\/strong><br><strong>more than 30 km = WAN<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those kinds of distance ranges may be useful as rough examples, but modern networks are better understood by their <strong>scope, purpose, ownership, and architecture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Personal Area Network \u2014 PAN<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>Personal Area Network<\/strong>, or PAN, is a small network formed around an individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It usually connects personal electronic devices that are physically close to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>smartphone connected to wireless earbuds;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>smartwatch connected to a phone;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>laptop connected to a Bluetooth mouse;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>phone connected to a car entertainment system;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>computer connected to a wireless keyboard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common PAN technologies include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bluetooth;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>USB;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NFC;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>other short-range wireless technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A PAN is usually very small compared with other network types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it is better not to define it by saying that it must cover exactly \u201ca few metres.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important idea is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A PAN connects devices associated with an individual or a very small personal workspace.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A typical example is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Smartphone \u2194 Bluetooth Earbuds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Laptop \u2194 Bluetooth Mouse<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Local Area Network \u2014 LAN<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>Local Area Network<\/strong>, or LAN, covers a relatively small geographic area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typical examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a room;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a home;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an office;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a floor of a building;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an entire building;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sometimes a group of nearby buildings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common LAN technologies include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ethernet;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wi-Fi.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A typical home LAN might look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Laptop \u2192 Wi-Fi Access Point\/Router \u2192 Internet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An office LAN might look like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PC \u2192 Ethernet Switch \u2192 Server<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The defining idea is that the network operates within a <strong>local environment or premises<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does a LAN Have a Fixed Radius?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A LAN does <strong>not<\/strong> have a universal maximum radius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One common source of confusion is the 100-metre limit associated with copper Ethernet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a typical twisted-pair Ethernet connection may have a maximum cable length of approximately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>100 metres<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that is the maximum length of <strong>one Ethernet cable segment<\/strong>, not the maximum size of the entire LAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PC \u2014 100 m \u2014 Switch \u2014 100 m \u2014 Switch \u2014 100 m \u2014 Server<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The devices may be hundreds of metres apart even though each Ethernet link follows its own distance limitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using fiber-optic Ethernet, individual links can extend much farther.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the technology, fibre Ethernet links can extend:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>hundreds of metres;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>several kilometres;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tens of kilometres.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The physical size of a LAN is not determined by one Ethernet cable length.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can a LAN Contain a Router?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A common misunderstanding is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LANs contain switches, while MANs and WANs contain routers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A LAN can absolutely contain routers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, one building may contain several IP networks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><code>192.168.10.0\/24<\/code> \u2014 employees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>192.168.20.0\/24<\/code> \u2014 guests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>192.168.30.0\/24<\/code> \u2014 servers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>192.168.40.0\/24<\/code> \u2014 IoT devices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traffic between these IP networks must be routed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The routing may be performed by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a router;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a Layer-3 switch;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a firewall with routing capabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, one local network environment can contain many routers or Layer-3 devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presence of a router does <strong>not<\/strong> automatically make a network a MAN or WAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can a LAN Have Multiple Network Addresses?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is another important distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>LAN<\/strong> is not the same thing as an <strong>IP subnet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A LAN describes a local network environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An IP subnet describes a logical Layer-3 addressing domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A single office building could contain all of these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>10.10.10.0\/24<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>10.10.20.0\/24<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>10.10.30.0\/24<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>10.10.40.0\/24<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and the entire environment may still reasonably be described as a LAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Routers or Layer-3 switches route traffic between those subnets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>One LAN can contain multiple IP networks or subnets.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Campus Area Network \u2014 CAN<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>Campus Area Network<\/strong>, or CAN, connects multiple LANs across several nearby buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word \u201ccampus\u201d should not be understood only in the educational sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A CAN can exist in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a university;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a college;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a hospital complex;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a large corporate campus;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a research facility;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an industrial complex.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Building A LAN<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>Campus Fiber Backbone<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>Building B LAN<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>Campus Fiber Backbone<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>Building C LAN<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of these buildings may belong to the same organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A CAN is therefore larger than the typical individual building LAN, but smaller than a city-scale network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A useful way to remember it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LAN = local building or premises<\/strong><br><strong>CAN = multiple nearby buildings within one campus<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fiber is commonly used to connect campus buildings because it supports high speeds and long distances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Metropolitan Area Network \u2014 MAN<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>Metropolitan Area Network<\/strong>, or MAN, spans a metropolitan or city-scale region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It typically connects multiple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>offices;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>buildings;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>campuses;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>branches;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>data centres;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LANs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, an organization may have several locations around a city:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Office A<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>Metropolitan Network<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>Office B<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>Metropolitan Network<\/strong><br>\u2193<br><strong>Office C<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These sites may be several kilometres or tens of kilometres apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditionally, some textbooks describe a MAN as covering something like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1 to 30 miles<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or approximately the size of a city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That can be useful as a rough mental picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it should not be treated as a strict definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 29-mile network is not automatically a MAN while a 31-mile network suddenly becomes a WAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The better definition is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A MAN interconnects networks or sites across a metropolitan or city-scale area.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does a MAN Need Routers?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Routers are very common in MANs, but they are not what defines a MAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose three offices use different IP subnets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Office A:<\/strong> <code>10.1.0.0\/16<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Office B:<\/strong> <code>10.2.0.0\/16<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Office C:<\/strong> <code>10.3.0.0\/16<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traffic between them must be routed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So a MAN will often include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>routers;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Layer-3 switches;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>carrier equipment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>firewalls.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, some metropolitan services can operate mainly at Layer 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Metro Ethernet is a good example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>MAN does not mean \u201ca network containing routers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means a network with metropolitan geographic scope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can a MAN Use the Same IP Network Address at Multiple Sites?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technically, yes in some designs, but this requires careful explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a normal routed design, different sites should normally use <strong>different IP subnets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Site A:<\/strong> <code>192.168.10.0\/24<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Site B:<\/strong> <code>192.168.20.0\/24<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is straightforward because routers know where each network is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using exactly the same subnet independently at multiple routed sites would create ambiguity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if two sites both use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>192.168.10.0\/24<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a router may not know which site contains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>192.168.10.50<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">unless special technologies or network separation methods are used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, in a normal routed MAN:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Each routed subnet should normally have a unique IP prefix.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Layer-2 Extension Across a Metropolitan Area<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an important exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A provider can sometimes extend the same Layer-2 Ethernet network across geographically separated locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Building A<\/strong><br><code>192.168.10.0\/24<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2193<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Metro Ethernet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2193<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Building B<\/strong><br><code>192.168.10.0\/24<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the customer&#8217;s perspective, both buildings may appear to belong to the same Ethernet LAN or VLAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can be useful, but extending one large Layer-2 domain over long distances can also create management and reliability challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large modern networks therefore often prefer routed designs rather than one enormous broadcast domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Metro Ethernet?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Metro Ethernet<\/strong> is an Ethernet-based networking service delivered across a metropolitan area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ordinary Ethernet is usually associated with a local network:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PC \u2192 Ethernet Switch \u2192 Server<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Metro Ethernet extends Ethernet connectivity between geographically separated locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Office A \u2192 Metro Ethernet \u2192 Office B<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The offices may be many kilometres apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the customer&#8217;s perspective, the service may look like a very long Ethernet connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Internally, however, the service provider may use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul
